Let's Catch Up!

This is going to be one long and photo-heavy post so settle in! As you can imagine, life has been a little nutty in this house. Dave and I certainly have our hands full!JD loves the baby. He gets so excited when we let him hold her on his lap....until she poops while lying there. Then he gives her a look of disgust and tries to push her away! He asks to see her first thing in the morning and gets very concerned when she cries. The only time he doesn't love her is when I have to nurse her or change her. Then he cries and whines and tries to climb up my legs.
So containing and entertaining JD has become the major task around here. I took him to Target the other night to purchase a baby gate that swings open. I have short legs and climbing over baby gates while holding a newborn and trying to corral a toddler isn't easy at all! My thought for this swinging baby gate was to block off the front two rooms (JD's room and the nursery) so I could sit in the nursery and nurse Allie without JD having free reign over the entire house. Well, it's not working as well as I thought it would. I must have been delusional or something. JD's new favorite thing to do is close the gate and then yell that he's "stuck" so I have to go open the gate for him again...and again...and again. I didn't want to keep it closed all the time because I don't mind him wandering into the nursery or his room to play while I'm in the living room but that's what I'll have to do until I can figure out some way to keep him from constantly closing the gate! Here he is, "stuck" in baby jail...Allison is also doing well. I had to take her to the doctor on Saturday morning because she had green goopiness sealing her eye shut all night. Poor thing... it really was disgusting! She has a clogged tear duct that got infected but a day of eye drops cleared it right up. The other thing that was noted during that visit to the pediatrician was that she hadn't gained any weight in the four days since her last visit. Newborns are supposed to gain one-half to one ounce per day. So, I took her back to the doctor yesterday for a weight check and her two week checkup. She now weighs nine pounds exactly, gaining four ounces in three days, so all is well. Also yesterday, her umbilical cord stump fell off. We'll give it a couple more days to heal up and then it's bath time! I hope she likes a real bath better than her sponge baths!

Now it's time to brag on myself because I really impressed myself on Saturday morning. I called the pediatrician at 8:45 AM and, because they're only there for a couple of hours on Saturdays, the latest they could get me in was 9:45 AM. So here I am, still in my pajamas, JD is still in his pajamas and Dave has already gone to work.... and I have exactly one hour to get dressed, get JD dressed, pack a separate bag for JD, drop him off at Dave's work (which is in the opposite direction of the pediatrician's office) and get to the doctor. Plus, this is my very first time even attempting to get out the door with a newborn and a toddler whose favorite game is chase! I'm uber proud to say that we made it right on time.....only because it was Saturday morning and there was no traffic.....but we still made it on time!

My mom had to leave early last week to go to her 91 year old mother in Tennessee whose health is failing. I know she hated leaving her first granddaughter but I'm glad she went to be with Grandma Marge. Dave's parents still have not been able to make the trip down from Pennsylvania and I know they're dying to be here too! All I can say is thank goodness for family, friends and neighbors. My dad drives up a couple of times per week to help me occupy JD while I nurse or bathe the baby. Yesterday he kept JD while I took Allie to the doctor and did a little grocery shopping. We've also had friends and neighbors bring food and give us their time to come hang out and play with JD. I've had a few days alone with both kids and it's not easy but it's not terrible either.

Allie is starting to get marginally better about letting me put her down and she's getting into sort of a schedule at night too. She now wakes twice each night to eat. Last night I got four straight hours of sleep. It was heavenly! Although, the only place she'll sleep is in her car seat. Right now we both just need to sleep so I'm not fighting that too hard. I've found that if I put the car seat on the floor right next to the bed I can lay on my stomach, dangle my right arm down and rock her to sleep while resting at the same time!

She did allow me to take some photos of her yesterday. The dress I brought her home from the hospital in is the very same dress that I wore home from the hospital when I was born. Unfortunately, we were so rushed leaving the hospital and there was so much going on when we got home that I didn't get any pictures of her in it. Here are a couple of my favorites... I think I'm going to try this again with a black background. The pale pink of the dress kind of gets lost on a white background, don't you think? And while I was playing photographer I had to get some naked baby pics (well, semi-naked...she was wearing her diaper). I think they turned out quite well but I think I like the second one in black and white the best!Okay, so I took it a step further while she was already undressed. We got a gift in the mail the other day with the cutest bow. I've seen pics on the internet of newborns with bows tied around their waists and I've always loved them... because a baby really is a gift. Well, I couldn't let this cute bow go to waste so I tucked the ends under her belly and this is what I got! Just like above, I think I like the second one in black and white the best!Whew! That's it. That's all we've been up to. Hopefully we'll settle in to a routine soon and I'll have more time to post regularly so I don't have to write a novel of a post next time.
