We had a pretty chill week last week.
Tuesday my mom came up to keep Allie while I took JD to the dentist for the first time. I couldn't get any pictures, though because it was me who was getting their teeth cleaned! Our dentist recommends bringing the kids in with us around the age of 2 so they can get used to the sights/sounds of the dentist's office and maybe won't freak out for their first visit around the age of 3. JD did outstanding! I was afraid he was going to either freak out (like he did at my first ultrasound when I was pregnant with Allie) or wreak havoc on their office but he was a very well behaved little boy. The hygienist had a coloring book and markers that he played with a little bit and then he dug through her treasure chest of plastic trinkets. When he tired of that he just stood beside me and watched what she was doing! After my teeth were cleaned he sat on my lap and we went up and down a few times in the chair...he really liked the chair ride!
After the dentist we visited a day care. I've been researching day cares lately, wanting to put JD in "school" a couple of days a week. He did awesome there too! He's in a bit of a separation anxiety phase, screaming "mommy" and crying when I go to the bathroom and such. He's also usually very hesitant in new situations (new people's houses, the playground, etc) and hangs on to my leg for about 10 minutes until he feels comfortable. But when we walked in to the 2 year old room at this day care it was more like "mommy who?" He dove right in and played cars with all the other children. I even left him in the room for a few minutes while I toured the playground and the rest of the facility. The teacher said he did great while I was gone!
After the day care visit JD got a hair cut in preparation for our big trip to Nanny and Poppy's house next week! When we got home Allie was happily playing on the floor with Grandma and Daddy, who had returned home from work while JD and I were out. She was a good girl while we were out and about, as I expected she would be!
The rest of the week was nothing of note. JD and I started a new project. I thought he might be a little more interested in learning his letters if we had the alphabet on the wall in his room. He always points to pictures on the wall of wherever we are and talks about them. But I didn't want any boring old alphabet... I wanted it to be bright, colorful and fun! So I found this blog called
No Time for Flashcards with a lot of really cute ideas and we've started making our own alphabet! So far we've done A, B and C. JD loves his "school time" and usually asks for more when we're done making his letter of the day so I'll let him sit there and paint or color until he gets bored. I stretched some string across one of JD's walls so we can use paperclips to hang his creations but I'm thinking I'm going to hang them higher in the green area, above the molding and not worry with the string.....
Saturday was a wonderful day! JD and Allie were both in good moods. JD enjoyed making his "C" and, when we were done he walked around the kitchen singing his "clean up" song.... he pushed all the chairs in around the kitchen table and even spotted a couple of Allie's dirty bibs on the floor in front of our laundry closet. As he sang his song he sweetly put her dirty bibs back in the kitchen drawer where I keep her clean ones. I didn't have the heart to tell him they needed to be washed instead. I was just so happy that he was cleaning up without me asking him to!
After naps I gathered the diaper bags and we headed to my friend Liz's house for play time and dinner. JD and Kendall butted heads about sharing toys at first but they worked it out and ended up playing great together! Allie was a little fussy because she was in need of a nap (she didn't really sleep in the car on the way like I had hoped she would) but she did well, considering. Here are some cute pics of the evening:
Other new and noteworthy items:
Allie now has an affection for paper and cardboard. She'll crawl across the room, past 40 toys to get to a book lying on the floor. I've started calling her Goat Girl... it's really quite funny!
I walked in to Allie's room after her morning nap and she was standing in her crib, very proud of herself... so the crib mattress got lowered to the lowest setting. Bye bye super cute crib skirt!
JD's appointment with the allergist is scheduled for August 31, 2010.
ALLIE HAS A NEW TOOTH! That's right, tooth #3 appeared on the top this morning and she's been a fussy mess all day. Hope it stops bothering her soon!
Dave bought a riding lawnmower from a friend of his. Got a great deal on it and JD LOVES it. He asks for a lawnmower ride every morning as soon as he wakes up!

Finally, we had a large storm on Friday afternoon. Allie was tired and fussy and JD was afraid of the thunder so I was busy tending to them. When Dave got home a little later he said "I guess the tree falling scared you?" I had no idea what he was talking about! We have a large Bradford Pear tree in our front yard. It's beautiful... well, it was beautiful! A major branch didn't survive the wind from the storm and half the tree ended up in the yard. Just a few feet longer and it would have been in Allie's window... and I didn't hear a thing! Dave had fun yesterday with the chain saw cutting up the branch and trying to even out the tree. It's kind of funny looking now but it'll fill in with time.
