The first time my ten toes ever touched the sand, they touched the Pawleys Island sand. Same with my dad. In fact, My first beach experience and my dad's first beach experience both happened at the Broken Groin on the South end of Pawleys Island - just a short walk from my dad's childhood home, the Log Inn. Pawleys is a magical place. A laid back place where nothing matters but the sun, sand, surf and family.
Many of my family's traditions are deeply rooted in Pawleys Island. That's why the first time JD's toes touched the sand, they needed to touch the Pawleys Island sand!
Dave, Debby and I drove JD down to Pawleys for a cookout at Kent and Sarah's house. We decided that we would take JD to the beach before the party since we would already be down there (it's about 45 minutes from our house). We met my dad at the Log Inn (my grandparent's house) and we all walked to the Broken Groin. As soon as we crested the beach access and JD caught sight of the ocean he let out a squeal and started flapping his arms in excitement.
We set all of our stuff down and JD crawled right into the water.... and that's where he stayed! He wasn't scared by the waves lapping at his feet, mostly he was just interested in the shells. I was warned by many that he would eat the equivalent of a bucket full of sand... but he didn't. He found a shell and sucked on it for quite a while. Then Dave and I took him out past the wave break and he showed off his cute little "swimming" skills. He played with his ball for a few minutes and then it was time to go.
Now that he's been to Pawleys I can take him to the beach closer to our house - up here in Myrtle Beach. It's my plan to try and take him once a week. I love that we have a beach baby! I spent many, many, many days on the beach as a child and those days harbor very fond memories!
Here are a few more pictures of our beach trip!
