The first family illness

There's nothing quite like changing pukey crib sheets in the middle of the night to make you really feel like a mom. That's right... we have the dreaded stomach virus. Yes, I typed "we".

Kent came over for dinner on Thursday night and, while he was there, my stomach started feeling yucky. Sure enough, I was up all night long. And, as luck would have it, so was JD. In fact, Sammy the cat even threw up for good measure. I think her ailment was more furball related, though. As if that wasn't enough, Samantha decided to go spastic at the back door at 5:30 AM on Friday morning, just half an hour before Dave's alarm was supposed to go off, and just as I was finally getting some rest. The neighbor's black cat was sitting on our porch looking at her through the french door and Samantha, apparently, thinks she can claw through glass if she tries really hard.

Yesterday was a little better. I was able to keep liquids and a tiny bit of food down. JD just lay in the bed next to me staring at the ceiling and holding on to my finger. If you've seen JD lately you'll know that's very uncharacteristic of him.... this kid just does not sit still. Yesterday evening took a turn for the worse. JD started running a fever and couldn't keep any formula down. I gave him some Tylenol and put him to bed at 7:00 PM. I went to bed in our room and Dave, trying to stay away from the germs, inflated the air mattress in our garage and slept out there. Don't worry, it was a warm night and there is a TV and a computer complete with Internet access in the garage.

I got up a few times when JD cried out. Every time I gave him formula, even just an ounce, it came back up immediately. Pedialyte, I learned, would stay down for about an hour before making it's reappearance.... so I decided to stick with Pedialyte for the rest of the night (pediatrician told us to give him equal amounts of formula and Pedialyte). Then, around 2:00 AM this morning it hit Dave.... hard! Thank goodness all I have left from this bug is a headache because if I was still down that would leave Sammy to care for us and, while she's great at snuggles, I don't think she knows how to use the thermometer!

As I write this, JD is in his crib sleeping. He has kept an ounce of formula and an ounce of Pedialyte down for almost an hour now. Dave is in our bed sleeping, finally.... and I am on the computer in the garage trying not to get reinfected (that's possible, right?). Sammy is sleeping next to me on the air mattress.

Oh.... I asked my friends on Facebook if "pukey" was a word and they assured me that I could make up words in situations such as these! Happy times!
